Springer Wins “Angola 50”

9/2/2007

The Labor Day Weekend proved to be an outstanding success with 33 O’Reilly USA Modifieds trying their hands on the High Banks of the Angola Motor Speedway for the 2nd Open Wheel Spectacular of 2007.  Times were tight as only a quarter of a second would separate the top 17 qualifiers but only the top 16 would advance into the A Main.  Jeff Weston of Cicero, IN posted quick time with a 14.891.  Angola, IN’s Erik Schaeffer won the Fast Dash along with North Manchester, IN native Tim Burkett taking home a Heat win.  Tony Dager of Spencerville, IN grabbed the B Main that seen the top 6 move into the “Angola 50”.

After all the hype and introductions the green flag waved with Cory Setser of Fort Wayne, IN and Schaeffer bringing the 24 car field out of turn 4.  Setser took the early lead with Saturday Night Angola Feature Winner Brad Springer of Hudson, IN on his rear bumper.  Springer looked to the inside groove attempting to move around Setser, only to slide back behind.  Finally on lap 5 Springer moved around Setser with Schaeffer following in his tracks for the second spot.  Fast Qualifier, Weston worked his way to third with Angola, IN native John Gearhart and Edon, OH’s Brian Nester in fourth and fifth side by side for position.  The battles continued toward the middle of the pack as positions moved back and forth between some of the top competitors.  Schaeffer who was running second slipped as he exited turn 4 and spun in front of the entire field.  Everyone was able to slow down and continue without incident.  Schaeffer would go to the tail allowing the field to bunch up for the restart.  Springer held on for his second O’Reilly USA Modified feature win of 2007 with Weston finishing second.  Gearhart, Nester and Fort Wayne, IN native Scott Coe rounded out the top five.  Damon Breedlove of Greenfield, IN took the AllStar Performance Hard Charger Award for advancing 8 positions.  Joe Axsom of Franklin, IN was awarded the LEAF Racewear Hard Luck Award for the evening.

The O’Reilly USA Modified Series will be in action at Flat Rock Speedway on Saturday September 15, 2007 with Gates Opening at 2pm, Practice at 3:30pm, Qualifying at 5pm and Racing at 7pm.  For more information on the O’Reilly USA Modified Series log on to www.usamodifieds.com.
