CURRY CAPTURES KALAMAZOO USA
05.20.06
Kalamazoo MI

Bob Curry captured his first USA Modified Series win Saturday by out running Ohio’s Brian Nester and a fast field of high powered Mods.
The night would start out with thirty two of the Midwest’s finest Mods on hand to do battle at Gary Howe’s three eights mile facility, the farthest from Olathe, Kansas. Qualifications would see final qualifier and former USA Champion Rodney Scott beat out Indianapolis youngster Scotty Tomasik by five thousands of a second, 13.981 to a 13.986 for the Firebottle Fast Time Award.
Kalamazoo’s own Brent “Captain” Hook would hold off Scott and Tomasik to take the six car Fast Dash. It would be “The Governor” Dan Logan taking the Fast Heat over fellow Michigan drivers Tom Jewell and Dan Frazier.
In the final preliminary race of the evening it would see Jason Dietsch taking the win over Cory Kruzel with Wisconsin’s Steve Schulz making the final transfer spot.
The USA Feature line up put Brad Springer and Dan Logan on the front row followed by Bob Curry and USA points leader Tim Burkett, the 07 of Tom Jewell and Rodney Scott, with Brent Hook and Brian Nester rounding out the top eight. As the field came for the green Scotty Tomasik made contact with the rear of Brent Hook’s number seventeen machine, as the field checked up in anticipation of the green, ending his night with a busted tie rod. On the re-start it would be Springer and Logan side by side as the field started to string out. Laps later Springer would start to fade and Rodney Scott would start an impressive run on the high side from the sixth spot to take over the lead four laps later. His night would be cut short as a sour engine would sideline Scott. Bob Curry slipped into second and then inherited the lead from Scott. With Logan now battling a relentless Brian Nester, both would battle through out most of the race before Nester finally got by and set sail for Curry. Time would run out as the race went green to checker and Curry would not be denied his first USA Modified Series feature win. Nester was second followed by Logan, point leader Tim Burkett and Brad Springer rounding out the top five.
Scott Coe would pick up the Allstar Performance Hard Charger Award with his 15th place finish.
The USA Modified Series moves to Indianapolis Raceway Park, May 27th for the traditional “Night Before The 500” race.
